To woke, or not to woke?
That is the question that seemed to be haunting M&M’s when they looked at ways to promote cultural diversity through their colourful chocolate treats.
Exactly why a sweets brand that is recognisable for its different colours needed to step into the fray is a mystery. Nonetheless, the company recently announced the introduction of a new purple M&M to symbolise their support for the LBGTQ community. All good so far.
In addition to the colourful changes, they also created ‘spokes candies’ as mascots, and in January this year introduced ‘female identified’ candies in Green, Brown and Purple. But when the Green M&M was given a pair of sneakers instead of ‘girl shoes’, it was the straw that woke the camel’s back.
At least as far as “the Illuminati is controlling your mind” political commentator, Tucker Carlson is concerned. He lashed out at the sweets company for making the shoes “less sexy”:
“M&M’s will not be satisfied until every last cartoon character is deeply unappealing and totally androgynous,”
Why Tucker feels so enraged by what type of shoes M&M’s wear is perhaps a fetish too complicated for us to understand, but M&M have decided to do what most companies do when in the ‘woke’ headlights – freeze.
According to EWN, the company said it was not aware that a few tweaks to its character would ‘break the internet’, and has pressed pause on the new marketing angle.
“But we now get it – even a candy’s shoes can be polarising. Which was the last thing M&M’s wanted since we’re all about bringing people together.”
Tucker Carlson seems to have too much time on his hands or feet, but we are sure he will at some point connect the dots between a left-wing extremist chocolate cult and M&M-inspired crocs.
Until then, may I suggest that Smarties keep their head down? If Tucker finds out there are no vanilla-flavoured chocolates in their packet he may just lose his mind, and run for president.
