We’re choosing the Spritz over the shvitz this summer.
Indeed, the classic Italian cocktail, Aperol Spritz, is the hottest thing to drink in this balmy weather.
Not only because it tastes like summertime in Italy and looks like a golden orange sunset, but because it was the most-searched drink of the (last) year according to Google’s Year in Search review for 2022.
While the New York Times once boldly declared that “The Aperol Spritz Is Not a Good Drink“, folks on the internet vehemently disagreed in 2022, putting the drink back into the spotlight.
With the Cape Town Summer really kicking up a hot fuss right now, we couldn’t be more grateful to sip on this special tipple.
To determine the most popular cocktails of 2022, Vine Pair reviewed the cocktail section of Google’s Year in Search compendium, which charts the drinks that had the highest rise in search traffic this year compared to 2021.
Since the bright Aperol Spritzes is basically synonymous with an easy breezy spring soiree, it’s only natural that searchers were seeking out the warm-weather drink.
As a result, it hit the number one search spot on top of some other nostalgic favourites:
Fitch & Leedes, the leaders in cocktail mixers, could have seen this coming:

The Fitch & Leedes Club Soda is delicately carbonated to highlight the flavour profile of the booze you choose, most especially balancing out the bright orange apéritif and inexpensive Italian sparkling wine added to make the tantalising Aperol Spritz.
All you need to do is fill a wine glass with ice, then add Aperol, Prosecco, club soda, and a slice of orange.
The generally accepted ratio is equal parts Aperol and Prosecco plus a splash of club soda. However, you can play around with the ratio until your Aperol spritz tastes exactly the way you like it.
I like mine with a little more Prosecco than Aperol so that it is less bitter. You can also make it less boozy by adding more soda.
Ditch the shvitz and choose a Fitch & Leedes Aperol Spritz this summer. No regrets over here.
