This murderous little menace has managed to grip the hearts of millions.
M3GAN, the lifelike AI doll central to the new horror and instant cult classic, takes the role of being any child’s best friend and protective companion to the absolute nth degree.
Gemma (played by Girls star Allison Williams) is a doting aunt and hard-working roboticist who made M3GAN to help keep her niece, Cady (played by Violet McGraw) company after her parent’s death.
Things are sunshine and rainbows for a brief second and then M3GAN takes her goals far too seriously, wreaking pure havoc and horror on everyone around her.
Behold:
And because one is never enough anymore, here’s the second official trailer:
Besides the spiffy trailers, the opening weekend at the box office has the numbers to prove that M3GAN is certainly one for the books, notes Mashable:
While the film had a production budget of $12 million, it managed to gross over $30 million in its opening, domestic weekend. The biggest opening for the first weekend of January since 2018. And the biggest opening for an original horror movie since Jordan Peele’s Nope (amongst other records).
M3GAN, essentially the queer-coded version of Chucky, merges camp and horror in a way that is sure to make it viral on social media.
Not to mention the memorable one-liners and dance numbers that are bound to be recreated, dubbed, and synced.
James Wan (The Conjuring, Insidious) is behind the Black Mirror-esque production and seems to have landed another franchise goldmine with talk of an M3GAN sequel:
In an interview with Collider, Wan shared that “In any of my movies, whether it’s The Conjuring Universe, or Saw, or Malignant, or M3GAN here, we like to think of a bigger world… So if we’re fortunate enough to have sequels, then we have an idea of where we want to go.”
Considering the film’s monstrous box office success, we could honestly be seeing a whole lot more of M3GAN.
