A video of an armed security guard running away from someone thought to be a gangster is doing the rounds on South African Twitter.
CapeTalk reported on the footage, depicting a “normal day in the shop with a security guard armed with a gun” who suddenly runs for his life when a “customer wearing a red T-shirt enters the outlet”.
The man in the red shirt then seems shocked that everyone had run away from him, and so he starts running away himself.
With very little detail, it is difficult to determine what happened, but the video is a hoot and reflects our strange relationship with crime.
Try to make sense of it yourself:

If you are struggling, like I am, perhaps these tweeps with theories can lend a hand.
Almost everyone in the comments is laughing at the fact that the security guard (with a gun) ran away from someone he assumed was a gangster (for some reason).
If the red-shirted man wasn’t up to no good, then the immediate skedaddling of everyone else is also pretty funny.
But some reckon that he was a criminal with a modus operandi:
Look closely, you will notice that there were four guys involved here…Number 1 is carrying the guns and that’s why number 2 stands next to him while 3 and 4 (pretending to be on that ATM) were looking on waiting for 1 and 2 to make the first move… pic.twitter.com/y8FZPdfEvg

Another theory came to light:
The guy wearing red was throwing things on the ground to see if the guard was alert. He threw three things on the ground, and the security recognized it as a sign of an eminent attack and thus ran for his life.

The way I see it, the security guard ran away, and then the “gangster” threw the cigarette in his mouth on the floor, followed by the one behind his ear, followed by his red beanie.
And then ran himself.
Shame, armed security guards in the country are not paid nearly enough to actually risk their lives, so I don’t blame this oke for pulling the alarm so quickly.
According to Indeed.com, an armed security officer’s salary in South Africa is usually around R8 466 per month, while Salary Expert says it’s a little higher:
No innocent civilian-come-gangster is worth taking a shot from on that salary.
