On Saturday afternoon, hijackers in Warner Beach, south of Durban were about to get away with a new Toyota Fortuner when armed bystanders started shooting at them.
It is believed that a couple of bikers from the nearby bar opened fire and saved the day.
CCTV footage captured the scene of the attempted hijacking, beginning with the SUV trying to park on the property when suddenly another car backs them in.
Four suspects get out to hold up the two occupants of the SUV at gunpoint, with one man searching the driver for valuables. The hijackers then get into the SUV to drive off, but something stops them.
TimesLIVE reported that shots were fired from a nearby property, believed to be a bar, adding that “although the gunmen are not featured in the clip, it is believed they were bikers”.
The suspects then crash the Fortuner, and the driver gets shot at, forcing him to crawl on the ground to the getaway car before fleeing. The hijackers also return the fire at some point but nobody besides the one suspect appears to have been hurt:
Ian Cameron, a community safety watchdog and founder of FirearmsZA and Firearms Guardian, exclaimed on Twitter that “lawfully armed citizens are lifesavers”.
Another community member was grateful to have missed the firing line:
The hijacking occurred at 4PM on Kingsway Road, near the intersection of Nelson Palmer Road, according to the Amanzimtoti Community Crime Prevention Organisation.
Close call, all.
