As much as we would like to herald in the opening of summer in November, it’s not quite as simple as that.
Here at 2oceansvibe, we take the business of declaring summer open very seriously and there is a set of rules we adhere to before the bottles are popped.
Last year, due to the weather not really playing ball, we had to bend the rules ever so slightly and December 8 was the latest we have ever made our annual proclamation.
The usual metric is the WeatherPro app showing a full week of sun icons (no clouds whatsoever) for Cape Town.
Living the holiday requires us to shut down the office in mid-December and as a result, we’re also going to take a slight liberty this time around.
A little cloud cover today, at least on the app, and a little on Friday, but we’ve hit 30 degrees on Thursday and that is good enough.
*clears throat* – summer is officially open!
I don’t know what that means for you. For us, it means lazy mornings into lunches, sundowners at Café Caprice after a day at the beach, and watching foreigners (and Vaalies) turning lobster red after insufficient application of sunscreen.
Wear sunscreen – there’s a whole song about it.
Another helpful tip is the fact that Café Caprice has a two-for-one burger special on Tuesdays and cocktails at happy hour are a vibe:

Never take a cocktail special for granted. December is a long, long month which easily bleeds into January.
Next thing you know, you’re eating two-minute noodles and hanging on for dear life until payday.
Half of Cape Town appears to be trying to sub-let their homes or apartments this holiday season so if you were hoping for that bailout, know that competition is stiff.
Well done on making it through most of 2022. Let’s finish on a high. Remain calm on our beaches, even when space is limited.
And, as always, wear sunscreen.
