How far is too far from Cape Town for a comfy weekend away?

I like to keep things within a two-hour drive. That means you can zip out around 3PM, having pretended to work since midday, and make it to your destination in time for sundowners.

It also means the drive home, quite possibly with a babelas, doesn’t ruin the whole weekend’s vibe.

Paternoster fits the bill in that it’s usually just shy of a two-hour drive. You also won’t bump into people you know from your misspent youth as you might in a place like Langebaan.

Maybe I should have started looking at the lower end of the property market for a weekend retreat. There’s not much fun in that, so instead, I’ve gone for the priciest home (not plot) I can find.

Property24 has this four-bedroom house, situated just outside the actual town, listed for R11,5 million:

One thing that we do know for sure is that you’re on the water’s edge and the views are cracking:

Quite rustic for the price tag. You are living in a nature reserve, so that’s a major plus.

If you prefer something a little more central and in the thick of things, there’s a three-bedroom going for R7,8 million.

Those price tags are really only worth it if you’re rolling in the dough or intend to live there year-round.

Otherwise, you’re better off renting every so often with the added bonus that you don’t have to clean up after yourself.
