Adam Sandler has come a long, long way since Happy Gilmour and The Waterboy.
Both Uncut Gems and Hustle, his latest endeavour, generated some Oscar buzz and his acting chops have impressed critics and fans alike.
Still, underneath it all, he’s that goofy guy who is often seen shooting hoops at his local basketball court and wandering around in ill-fitted clothes because he doesn’t care one iota about making a fashion statement.
On Monday night, he accepted the performer tribute award at the 32nd annual Gotham Awards in New York. He’s about to start the real hard yards of campaigning for an Oscar for his performance in Hustle, but first, he’s going to have a little fun.
Here’s Variety:
“I told my daughters Sadie and Sunny, who are 16 and 14, that I didn’t write a speech and they said phrases like, ‘Rude’ and ‘You’re mean,’” Sandler began. “Daddy’s fucking tired. Daddy works hard, calm down. They were like, ‘Can we write your speech, Daddy? So you got something to say.’ I said, absolutely.”
…The premise of Sandler’s daughters penning his acceptance speech, whether true or not, carried through the actor’s entire time on the stage, offering a self-deprecating peek behind the internal politics of the Sandler household.
He spoke about how his children are banned from laughing at Ben Stiller movies and how Big Daddy paid for the house they live in, as well as Rob Schneider’s house.
Timothée Chalamet also gets a mention and Sandler does well to make sure he thanks his wife before signing off:
