The Crown season five has been doing well to bring up old wounds.
The latest instalment deals with Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s messy divorce, with a few elements being dramatised and taken out of context to make the show run smoothly and effectively.
Not everyone is chuffed about that.
Especially not Dodi’s ex-fianceé, Kelly Fisher (appearing in Episode 10 that The Crown), who sued him for breaking off their engagement as pictures of him and Diana were released in gossip rags at the time.
As Elle notes, the romance between Diana and Dodi has been glamorised for over 25 years, but what is so frequently forgotten is the existence of the poor Kentucky-born model who suffered as a result of the affair.
Spoiler alert!
Fisher, who is portrayed by Erin Richards in the show, said that she and Dodi were engaged, living a newly-purchased Malibu home and planning a wedding set for August 1997, when he met Diana, Dominick Dunne reported in a 2008 Vanity Fair story.
On July 14 of that summer, the pair were in Paris when Dodi’s father asked him to join Diana and her sons on the Fayed family yacht, where they were vacationing. A few days later, Dunne wrote, Dodi asked her to fly to St. Tropez where she spent days on a second Fayed yacht and Dodi went between the two boats.
Bustle reports that a day after Kelly and Dodi’s proposed wedding day, the pictures of Dodi and Diana in St. Tropez – widely known as “The Kiss” photo now – were released to the tabloids.
At that point, completely beside herself, Kelly hired celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred to file a breach of contract lawsuit against Dodi:
Fisher claims that when Dodi broke up with her, he reneged on his promises to provide her with $2,000 a day and to buy a house in Malibu with her.
In a statement, Allred spoke on behalf of her client, saying that Dodi “led [Fisher] emotionally all the way up to the altar and abandoned her when they were almost there. He threw her love away in a callous way with no regard for her whatsoever.” She added, “Miss Fisher learnt about Mr. Fayed’s betrayal, not from Mr. Fayed but instead from the ‘kiss photo’ that was published and circulated around the world to Miss Fisher’s utter dismay, shock, and shame.”
Kelly further claimed that Dodi had offered her $500 000 to quit modelling and move to Paris, but he only gave her $60 000 and bounced a $200 000 check, causing her to seek the balance as damages.
Following Dodi’s death, however, Kelly dropped the suit:
Allred said, “Kelly suffered greatly because of the break up with Mr, Fayed. She was engaged to him, and they had planned to marry Aug. 9, 1997. Kelly loved Dodi very much, and she is devastated by his loss, and that of Princess Diana. Nothing is more important than the life of a human being. In the light of this enormous tragedy, Kelly forgives Dodi for all of his past injustices against her.”
Kelly apparently sold her story to Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp, and also participated in the inquest into Diana’s death.
She’s been relatively low-key since, working as a property developer in South Carolina and living with her husband, pilot Mikhail Movshina, and daughter Grace.
The next season of The Crown is supposed to come out of the wake of Diana’s divorce from Charles, following her relationship with Dodi, and the couple’s death in a car accident in August 1997.
If season five is anything to go by, season six won’t hold back from digging into Diana’s controversial final relationship with gusto.
