I’ll never forget where I was when I first heard about 9/11, when I first heard Nelson Mandela had passed on, and when I first heard that Steve Hofmeyr would no longer shop at Dis-Chem.
We must carry on, we must rebuild, and we must not let this earth-shattering admission by the Hof derail us.
Dis-Chem, in case you have forgotten, recently wrote in an internal letter dated September 19, which was later leaked, that it had placed a moratorium on hiring white people to improve its employment equity profile.
Founder and CEO Ivan Saltzman pointed out that because the pharmaceutical retailer is listed on the JSE, the company could be liable for crippling fines for noncompliance with the Employment Equity Act.
The numbers actually back that up and a Moneyweb article pointing out that “practically nine out of every 10 top and senior managers at Dis-Chem Group are white” was not well-received by readers.
Enter Hofmeyr and his announcement last week via social media. Please excuse the Google translation of his post from Afrikaans to English:
I have made such good friends over the years at Dischem. White or black was NEVER a question until their boss reminded me this month that whites are inferior in his eyes. Here I walk out for the last time with my original prescription. There are other pharmacies exempt from derogatory virtue signaling and partisan race policies.
You’ll notice the prescription is blanked out in that image up top. My guess is that he was grabbing his monthly staple of erection pills.
No worries, Steve – if you run out you can always stare at the old South African flag. We know that gets you hard.

There was also a summary of his recent concerts at Pretoria’s Atterbury Theatre (“we are selling our brand new coffee mugs for the first time… Mmm. This works. To Orania and beyond!”) and a celebration of the fact that “BEE is all of a sudden illegal”, which is not exactly the full story.
We need to see that mug shot in all its glory:
That’s the Christmas prezzie for your racist uncle sorted, then.
Fish Hoek High School’s recent diversity training debacle gets a mention from Oom Steve:
TThey want to make kids less racist with more racism, cite whites as villains, and give scholars nice new sex ideas to shorten their boredom. This is exactly what Critical Race Theory and Critical Gender Theory are. Good luck with that.
It’s already 30 years later and South Africans have never been so distrustful to each other and never has decolonised science made our collective so stupid. Recognize it, recognize it and eradicate it.
I’m not sure we should take much heed of his comments about “nice new sex ideas”.
You might recall that in April, following Disney’s announcement that its characters would become more inclusive, Hofmeyr rubbed his two brain cells together and came up with this, reports IOL:
“While my generation learned to speak to mice, ducks and dogs our children will be taught how to have sex with mice, ducks and dogs … You think it’s weird, but let me tell you why I’m saying this. Those relationships with animals are part of that ‘+’ at the end of the LGBTQ; that includes those kinds of relationships with animals,” Hofmeyr wrote on social media.
Spoiler alert – that’s really not what the ‘+’ is for, ou pal.
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) soon instituted legal proceedings against Hofmeyr, saying his comments amounted to hate speech.
Hofmeyr said earlier this month that he apologised for the comments but also stated he believes he didn’t do anything wrong.
SAHRC commissioner André Gaum said they deemed his response “inadequate” and there will now be a hearing in February next year.
