I felt pretty banging when I got my first Tweety-themed debit card as a teen.
But that is pure child’s play compared to some of South Africa’s most exclusive credit cards catering for the ultra-rich.
When looking at the numbers needed to achieve these status symbols, I will always be that teen with a Tweety card even though I have upgraded since then.
The credit cards that BusinessTech lists are all tailored to high-income earners, and even VIP customers accustomed to a millionaire lifestyle.
They’re made of metal, nogal, not the cheap, flimsy, environmentally-dubious plastic that plebs are used to.
To get your hands on South Africa’s most exclusive and wealth-showy-offy credit card, the Discovery Bank Purple Wealth Suite (see up top), you’ll need to be at the tip-top of earners:
The Discovery Bank Purple Suite targets the ultra-rich, requiring prospective cardholders to have an income of more than R2.5 million per annum, and charges a monthly fee of R570 per month.
According to Discovery, some of the perks of this offering include up to 75% off on local and international business class flights for themselves and a spouse, free gym memberships, better rates on investments, and luxury accommodation through the Purple Hotel Collection.
Nothing says rich like a purple metal card, folks.
Second on the list is a little black number, the FNB Private Wealth credit card:
The FNB Private Wealth Credit Card is available to South Africans with an annual income of at least R1.8 million or people with a net asset value over R15 million and charges a monthly fee of R555 per month.
With this card, you can enjoy perks such as exclusive eBucks lifestyle benefits, access to over 1 000 airport lounges globally, as well as iStore, Cycle Lab, and The Pro Shop exclusive FNB offers.
The cheapest most exclusive credit card on the list seems to be Absa’s Private Banking Signature credit card.
To gain this card you would have to earn R750 000 annually or R62 500 per month, and need to pay the lowest monthly fee of R185.
Some of the benefits include 57 days interest-free on qualifying transactions, complimentary visits to Bidvest Premier Local and International Airport Lounges, 24-hour private banking assistance, as well as access to Visa’s luxury hotel collection.
Must be nice to have everyone at your beck and call when you whip out a card.
I simply don’t have the funds.
