Welcome to another Thursday.
By now, you should have put the hurt of the Springbok loss to Ireland behind you and started looking forward to Saturday night’s clash with France.
Pace yourself at the braai because kick-off is only at 10PM
We shan’t speak of the Proteas and yet another scar that will take years to heal.
Today’s throwback takes us all the way back to 2006. A simpler time, before Facebook and Instagram and TikTok, when hangovers weren’t crippling and the thought of a midweek bender didn’t send shivers down the spine.
Guy Goma is the hero here and his plight is something that we can all relate to in some way – being woefully underprepared and in over our heads.
Except that wasn’t really Guy’s fault, as TIME spells out:
Goma, after arriving at the BBC’s West London headquarters for an interview for a job in the IT department on May 8, 2006, was mistaken for a studio guest, British technology journalist Guy Kewney, and ushered all the way into a live BBC News 24 studio…
Looking baffled and nervously eying the cameras, the wrong Guy proceeded to have a go at answering presenter Karen Bowerman’s questions about the future of downloading.
Turns out Guy’s answers weren’t too far from the truth, but the real gem here is Guy’s face when the penny drops:
It’s impossible not to like this man and 10 years after the ill-fated interview, it was named one of the BBC’s most memorable bloopers.
Appearing on the 2006 Big Fat Quiz of the Year, Guy further endeared himself to the public:
Guy, wherever you are in the world, we thank you.
