This was not a great weekend for South African sports fans.
The Bokke ruined the Saturday night vibe with a narrow loss to Ireland and then Proteas fans woke up to the horrific news that our team had again choked during crunch time.
You could argue that to choke, you have to be in the ascendancy, but losing to both Pakistan and Ireland while knowing that a single win would cement a semi-final place qualifies in my book.
Whatever the case, Sunday in the Bo-Kaap provided the perfect hangover / depression cure as the Red Bull Box Cart Race took to the streets and the sky.
Contestants flew down the area’s iconic streets and took flight to great cheers from the crowd. There can only be one winner, and that honour belongs to The Potjie Boytjies:

Immaculate control through the chicanes and superb navigation of the potholes and launch ramps – worthy winners, for sure.
Cape Town’s number one pizza, Butler’s Pizza, also starred at the race and managed to keep it together while being airborne:

Fantastic work from @bo_kaap_bokke, “the fastest flankers in Cape Town”.
For those who aren’t familiar with how the race works, let’s rehash some basic details via Red Bull:
Red Bull Box Cart Races (they are called Soapbox races elsewhere) are held on a variety of courses in cities around the world. The first Red Bull Box Cart race was held in Belgium in 2000 and since then it has spread around the world with over 100 events taking place from France and Germany to Norway and New Zealand (where the Kiwis call it ‘Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix’)…
Red Bull Box Cart Race is a race for non-motorised carts only… The teams will be judged on their creativity and cart design, the showmanship of their 20-second skit, and race time…
Creativity counts but the esteemed judging panel will be looking at the racing performance too.
Using those criteria, it’s little wonder that the flying potjie pot came out tops.
Red Bull has yet to release an official video highlights reel of the event. This, via National Motorsport Mzansi, is the most in-depth review of the day’s experience at present:
