Yesterday, the giant dome of the Jakarta Islamic Centre Grand Mosque in Indonesia completely collapsed.
A fire had broken out in the religious building, and the dome came tumbling down shortly afterwards, sending smoke and debris billowing into the sky.
Apart from the mosque, the Islamic Centre complex also houses educational, commercial, and research facilities.
The Times reported that the dome was destroyed by a fire during renovation taking place at the centre, but the actual cause of the fire is not yet known.
Amazingly, no one was injured in the fire or the ensuing collapse:
Firefighters were alerted about the blaze shortly after 3 pm local time, with at least ten fire engines being dispatched to the scene, Indonesia media reported.
The internet is ablaze with footage from the scene, showing the fire eating at the dome until it falls to the ground in black smoke:

Other footage shows things more clearly and close-up:
It has been confirmed that the police are investigating the cause of the fire and have questioned contractors working in the building.
Interestingly, the mosque’s dome caught fire during renovations almost exactly 20 years ago as well.
That October 2002 blaze took five hours to extinguish, apparently.
