Cape Town is not shy of a good food market.
In fact, the Mother City is pretty loaded, with food stalls to die for at the Mojo Market, the Oranjezicht City Farm Market, the V&A Food Market, the Bay Harbour Market, the Neighbourgoods Market, the Blue Bird Garage Food and Goods Market, and a few out in the Winelands, too.
You get the gist, the city has drool-worthy snacks at every corner.
But now, Time Out is bringing its own market concept to our stunning shores, and everyone can’t be more excited.
The Time Out Market is the world’s first editorially curated food and cultural market concept, which basically brings a city’s best chefs, restaurateurs, and unique cultural experiences together under one roof.
The Time Out Market aims to capture and celebrates the food soul of the city it is in, hosting fun things like cooking classes with top chefs to installations from local artists and live entertainment.
The very first Time Out Market opened in 2014 in a historic market hall in Lisbon, quickly becoming the most popular destination in the city with four million visitors a year:

The success of Lisbon allowed Time Out to spread out even further, opening in five major cities across North America in 2019 and then expanding into the Middle East with Time Out Market Dubai.
Now, more locations are in the pipeline including Porto, Abu Dhabi, Prague, Osaka, London, and of course, Cape Town, Africa’s first Time Out Market.
Eat Out has the lowdown:
Time Out Market Cape Town is expected to open towards the end of 2023 at the V&A Waterfront. Visitors will get to taste food from local top chefs and much-loved restaurateurs, sip cocktails from award-winning mixologists and enjoy culture and entertainment from rising talents.
The space will span 27,000 sq ft and feature fourteen kitchens, four bars and one stage. With approximately 750 seats, guests will be able to sit indoors or quayside with the spectacular view of Table Mountain as a backdrop.
This is pretty much what we’re in for:
David Green, CEO of V&A Waterfront Holdings, says that this couldn’t be a more exciting opportunity:
“Time Out Market coming to our city reaffirms Cape Town as one of the world’s leading tourism destinations. We look forward to the vibrant offering and another way of showcasing local culinary expertise.”
I don’t know about you, but I am hella excited for another room full of food, this time from all the best restaurants in the city.
I need to work on stretching my tummy for next year then.
