In a discovery that seems more at home in the script of a B-grade crime drama series, it was alleged that drug lords in Miami’s Federal Detention Center were receiving visits from pole-dancers.
As ridiculous as the situation itself, the dancers simply pose as official “legal assistants” and thereby gain entry to visitor rooms.
“They take off their tops and let the guys touch them,” veteran defense attorney Hugo Rodriguez says. “Any lawyer can sign a form and designate a legal assistant. There is no way of verifying it. The process is being abused.”
Although it’s very difficult to verify, lawyers and guards all but confirm the reports. Recently one “discovery room” had to closed down when guards interrupted an inmate and a “paralegal” doing a bit more than discussing prison terms.
In addition to receiving these special visits, paralegals have also been accused of smuggling in pornographic magazines, booze and cash. One incident, which was caught on tape, saw a woman stripping for an inmate in the jail’s Special Housing Unit.
“Everyone knows about it,” says a private investigator who asked not to be named. “We call them the ‘little hoochie mamas’… They are making a mockery out of the prison system here.”
