Police in riot gear are moving in on anti-Wall Street activists in Los Angeles right now. They’re enforcing the mayor’s order to evict protesters who have camped outside City Hall for the past eight weeks. Supporters are streaming into the area in a show of solidarity as the protesters seek to defy the order and risk arrest.
Police can be heard over loudhailers explaining to the protesters that they risk arrest, while officers in riot gear closed off downtown streets near the movement’s encampment.
A citizen journalist was heard over the live feed saying: “Thank you for supporting us just by watching us live on this feed.”
Richard French, a police spokesperson didn’t confirm any planned action against the Occupy campers but the video stream indicates otherwise:
We’re on tactical alert, and it’s a citywide tactical alert: just be ready, just be there, having officers available. It’s just a phase of readiness where there is people on call and officers on call if needed.
On Monday, protesters defied an order to disperse and officers retreated, but officers have come back in full force and surrounded the protesters from all sides this time.
One protester was heard saying they had buckets of water ready to douse any tear gas canisters that may be discharged.
Officers could be seen making arrests and detaining protesters that refused to leave the City Hall area.
