A scene which could’ve come right off the pages of Slumdog Millionaire took place at a Mumbai train station recently when a citizen-initiated flash mob erupted in the midst of commuters.
Flash mobs originated in New York at the turn of the millennium, and since have spread around the world like wildfire. Despite that, the Mumbai flash mob is the first of its kind in the world’s second most populous city.
The awesome event was organised by Shonan Kothari, 23.
I always wanted to be part of a flashmob, having watched several videos of it on YouTube. I decided to organise one and spread the word through friends and family, and got a very enthusiastic response.
Kothari was the first one to break into a dance when the flash mob’s music took over the PA system. Divided into groups of 50 people, participants aged between 4 and 60 had been practicing at a yoga studio in the preceding weeks.
The whole performance had commuter’s entranced, many of whom missed their trains,
A small group of people who looked like regular commuters suddenly started dancing,” said [one onlooker]. “As the song progressed, more and more people joined in until there were at least 200. I tried to join in, but realised that it was all choreographed, and everyone was perfectly synchronised. It was thoroughly entertaining.
For first-timers, it was a superb effort and I hope it inspires similar efforts elsewhere in the world.
