The internet is enthralled by King Charles III’s frustrated face-pulling and gesturing during Saturday’s proclamation ceremony.
Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, the official proclamation was televised for the first time and the memes were officially launched.
We have to forgive the grieving royal for finding difficulties with a pen and an inkpot while signing the official Accession Proclamation documents.
As he approached the small desk, he immediately had a little wobbly about having both the pen box and the inkpot on the tiny surface, which also had to fit the large documents, per ET Canada.
His panicked gestures to his aides to clear the desk and then later, his snarl to the “royal pen mover” has the internet in hysterics, from TikTok to Twitter:

Where’s the pen guy?! King Charles seems angry and frustrated at his desk setup, summons an aide to fix it, twice. The Queen never lost her cool in public like this. pic.twitter.com/vU8Q2I3gFU

PEOPLE reported that Charles’ role was to affix his signature, ‘Charles R’, the traditional royal signature dating back to the 12th century, to the documents. The “R” stands for Rex, Latin for the King (or Regina when used by Queens).
The inkpot and pen were gifted to him by his sons, Prince Harry and Prince William.
But that didn’t stop the jokes about Charles nicking the pen after signing:
Charles pocketing the pen, William having to ask for one, the other pens being in the way…the most relatable thing I’ve seen today #Accession #CharlesIII

Mostly, people were interested to find such relatability at the moment:
Couldn’t they have got a bigger table?! King Charles, Prince William and the Queen Consort all having to work round the pen tray and ink wells squeezed onto the table about the size for balancing a TV dinner on.

I know it’s only just happened, but King Charles manically trying to rid his tiny desk of the pen tray is 100% going to be a meme.

Charles’ brief fury at the pen tray is definitely the highlight of this for me. #Proclamation
