There have been countless news articles and many books detailing how Steinhoff, with Markus Jooste at the helm as CEO, orchestrated the biggest corporate scam in South African history.

But this is 2022 and if you really want to reach the masses, you make a true-crime docuseries.

The fact that Steinheist is on Showmax means it won’t reach every South African. You can bet it’s going to be talked about, though.

On September 22, Steinheist will premiere on Showmax and new episodes air each Thursday through to October 6.

Made by Idea Candy, the producers of Devilsdorp, Jooste and others (such as former CFO Ben la Grange) will be dreading its release.

“Steinheist is the story of Markus Jooste and a hundred-billion-rand lie that everyone bought – a lie that was built across over two decades. How did this happen? How did no one see it coming? And how is Marcus Jooste not in jail?”.

That is a very, very good question.

According to Steinhoff CEO Louis du Preez, the company is waiting on a court date to move forward with recouping money from its former boss. He’s also being investigated by the Hawks, although charges have yet to be formally announced.

Steinheist will showcase “the richest cast in Showmax history” – Jooste, Christo Wiese (he’ll have an axe to grind), Bruno Steinhoff (the founder of Steinhoff International), and current CEO du Preez, among others.

The docuseries will also feature Financial Mail editor Rob Rose (he wrote the book, Steinheist, on which the docuseries is based), Pieter du Toit, author of The Stellenbosch Mafia, and Moneyweb managing editor Ryk van Niekerk.
