Elon Musk may not have a great relationship with his father, Errol, for very understandable reasons, but he remains close with his mother, Maye.

Errol and Maye have three children together – Elon, Kimbal, and Tosca, 48.

The SpaceX founder and his mother certainly had a great time at this year’s Met Gala (pictured above). We also learnt that Maye’s accent retains a very strong South African twang.

Despite the fact that her son is the richest person on the planet, Maye says going to visit Elon isn’t exactly the epitome of luxury. Here’s The New York Post:

In fact, when she visits the tech magnate… in Texas, the mom-of-three revealed she has to “sleep in the garage.”

“You can’t have a fancy house near a rocket site,” she [said].

Clearly, the 74-year-old former model isn’t high maintenance.

Maye also paid tribute to her sons for their generosity. Two decades ago, she was living in a rented studio flat in San Francisco when Elon and Kimbal promised things were about to drastically change.

“We couldn’t afford to have a birthday party. Then one of the investors in Elon and Kimbal’s company said we could use her home. So the kids picked up not so fancy food and they gave me a little wooden house and a little wooden car and promised me that one day they would buy me the real thing.

“I said, ‘That’s so sweet,’ thinking it would never happen. Next thing you know, that is what they did.

As soon as the two sold their software company, Zip2, they made good on their promise.

For Maye, the end of any and all money worries is something she is very grateful for:

“When I first came to Paris at 21, I had $5 a day. I stayed in a room with one lightbulb hanging down.”

…“There were hard times. Tosca and I were joking the other day about how we all lived in a one-bedroom apartment for a year. For a long time after I left my marriage, I had a pain in my gut. I was so terrified about not being able to feed my kids.”

It’s safe to say that none of her children will unwillingly be going hungry these days.

However, Elon has recently embraced the intermittent fasting diet. Perhaps he didn’t take too kindly to some of the jibes that came his way after those pictures of him in Greece were published.
