Johnny Depp turned up at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday as the show’s iconic mascot, the Moon Person.
Although he wasn’t physically present, his face was digitally superimposed onto the astronaut, which floated high above the stage.
This bizarre cameo comes months after a seven-person ruled mostly in his favour, finding that his ex-wife Amber Heard defamed him in her 2018 Washington Post op-ed about domestic violence, though she didn’t mention him by name.
He said the jury “gave me my life back” and added that the “best is yet to come”, reported PEOPLE.
Heard, meanwhile, called it a “setback” for women who speak out after she won just one of her three defamation countersuit claims.
Since the case’s conclusion, Depp has been keeping nice and busy.
He’s shown up in the docuseries Boston George, starring as the cocaine-trafficking Medellín Cartel, and he’s released an album with Jeff Beck, which The Guardian lambasted as egocentric.
But still, Depp said he needs more work, offering his myriad services at the VMAs:

TV Line reported that after Jack Harlow, Fergie, and Lizzo hit the stage, Depp was heard saying, “And you know what? I needed the work.”
He’ll need to break from his filming of King Louis XV in the period drama Jeanne du Barry, though, as well as directing Modigliani, a biographical drama about Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.
The film, co-produced by Al Pacino, marks his first feature-length directorial effort in 25 years (his last was 1997’s The Brave).
I’m not sure when he’ll squeeze in work at “birthdays, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes” but anyway, he seems pretty adamant that he can.
