Naturally, there’s been a flood of criticism flowing Meghan Markle’s way after her debut Spotify podcast series, Archetypes.
You know, the one that recently overtook The Joe Rogan Experience as the most-listened-to podcast on the platform.
Little did we know that much of the hate would be coming from our neck of the woods.
While speaking to Serena William about ambition and the various pressures and names that get thrown at women in the spotlight, Meghan added a little story about herself.
She recalled the moment in 2019 when she and Prince Harry visited Nyanga township as part of their royal duties on their trip to South Africa.
She said a fire had broken out in then-four-month-old Archie’s nursery after a heater malfunctioned.
Fortunately, Archie was not in the room at the time, but the news of the fire left Markle “shaken” and “in tears” and she almost couldn’t believe that she was expected to go on an official engagement at that point.
The snippet comes in around the 33-minute mark if you want to listen for yourself:
Since the podcast, widely dubbed the “latest Markle debacle” by critics, Twitter hashtags #MeghanMarkleIsALiar and #MeghanMarkleIsANarcissist have been trending internationally.
A homegrown version, #VoetsekMeghan, has also done the rounds.
EWN outlines the main issues that people all over Twitter had with this “over-dramatised” story:
The fact that she called the mansion she stayed in a “housing unit” seems to have rubbed a lot of Saffas the wrong way:

Meghan Markle doesn’t care how she portrays South Africa, she must never step foot here ever again.#VoetsekMeghan pic.twitter.com/c8OLKkZepe

Confirmed by staff at Silvertree residence in Cape Town – THERE WAS NO FIRE. There were a few complaints from the couple and one may have been about a heating unit not working. Not that they needed it as it was warm for the duration of their stay.

People like Meghan Markle making it seem like going to South Africa was the bravest thing she has done because SA is an uninhabitable place which almost took her son’s life. All the time she is lying and was coddled in a Cape Town mansion. She must truly fokof. #VoetsekMeghan pic.twitter.com/Tmm7QoSIcX

YouTuber Dr Todd Grande said the topics of the podcast were chosen by the former actress “deliberately in order for her to even the score” against the Royal Family and anyone who criticised her, per Cape Town Etc.
Meghan’s discussion regarding all the ways women are hated on certainly hasn’t seen her catch a break.
