Chances are you’ve seen the meme dubbed ‘Girl Explaining’ going around.

Part of its popularity is that we’ve seen the ‘Bro Explaining’ meme for more than a decade, as well as the ‘Milk Edinburgh Club Photo’ meme which first emerged in 2018.

A similar setup featuring a woman doing the explaining has been a long time coming and now it’s here with a bang, despite the fact that the image was taken at a New Year’s Eve beach party in Argentina in 2018.

It had a little burst of popularity in 2019 in Argentina and other Latino countries and really rose to worldwide prominence over the past month or so.

21-year-old Denise “Denu” Sánchez has now publicly explained what was actually happening, reports The New York Post:

In the picture, she has one arm slung around his shoulder and appears to be insistently explaining something in his ear.

However, the nutrition student revealed the picture isn’t nearly as dramatic as it appears: Her boyfriend was tired because it was getting late and she was singing along to a song when the woman in front of them posed for a picture that they happened to be in the background of.

“I remember she uploaded it to Twitter. She said, ‘What a letdown. They messed up the picture because those two kids were in the back with that face,”’ Sánchez [said].

“She was laughing because we came out in the back of the photo and she came out pretty, but she could not post it because we were in it.”

Denise was given free tickets to the festival’s 2019 party and thought that was the end of her 15 minutes of fame.

She was wrong.

And yes, Jack could have found space on that door alongside Rose but it doesn’t make for such a tearjerker ending, does it?

As for Denise, she’s undergone some life changes since her first round of viral fame. She’s broken up with the boyfriend in the meme, is “happily involved” with her new boyfriend, and has changed her hair colour:

Her advice for anybody else who ends up becoming a meme is to “take it easy and laugh about it”.
