In a rare interview from his Langebaan home in early June, Errol Musk tried to paint a picture of a semi-stable relationship between him and his son, Elon.
Despite a rocky past, Errol said their relationship had improved and “we care about each other”. That was somewhat undercut by his admission that they hadn’t seen each other face to face for more than six years.
You may be aware that Errol had a baby with his own stepdaughter, and has since had a second, which is often cited as a major reason for the pair’s strained relationship.
We can finally drop all pretences of the two being close following a bombshell interview Errol gave on Australian radio station KIIS 106.5’s The Kyle and Jackie O Show.
He called in for a 20-minute chat with the hosts and didn’t hold back at all, stating he wasn’t proud of Elon. Instead, it is his younger son Kimbal who is his “pride and joy”.
Errol also said he’s never received money from Elon, reports The Telegraph:
“We are a very frugal, stingy family,” Mr Musk, a South African former pilot and engineer, who made his wealth in property development.
Asked whether he was proud of Elon, the 76-year-old said: “No, well, you know, I mean, we are a family that has been doing a lot of things for a long time. It’s not as though we suddenly started doing something.”
…While acknowledging that Elon has “surpassed the mark”, Mr Musk stressed that Kimbal [above, in red], a chef and restauranteur, was also a billionaire.
It seems odd to call yourself a frugal family when Errol states he doesn’t drive a Tesla but does own Bentley, a Rolls-Royce, and a Mercedes.
Pressed on his son’s success, Errol went on to say Elon is “not as happy as he’d like to be” and feels like he’s “behind schedule” career-wise.
I just checked and Forbes estimates Elon is worth $271 billion. Sheesh, talk about a tough dad to please.
The world’s richest human’s love life was also put under scrutiny:
The patriarch contrasted the brothers’ love lives, praising Kimbal’s wife Cristiana Wyly while worrying that Elon would never find a partner willing to sacrifice their career.
“She’s with him all the time and that’s very, very nice,” he said. “Elon doesn’t [have that] and I worry about him.”
Elon has fathered 10 children, one of which died at 10 weeks of age. He has been married three times – once to Justine Wilson, his first wife, and twice to Talulah Riley.
During the chat with that Australian radio show, 76-year-old Errol was also asked about fathering children with his 34-year-old stepdaughter, Jana Bezuidenhout (below). He called himself a “ladies’ man” and said his relationship with Jana was “completely normal”.
He also stated earlier this month that “the only thing we are on Earth for is to reproduce”.
Naturally, he couldn’t resist getting a dig in after those topless pictures of Elon yachting in Greece were widely shared. This via The New York Post:
“Elon is very strongly built but he’s been eating badly,” his dad opined, adding that he has touted to Elon the purported weight loss properties of a supplement called garcinia cambogia.
I’ve Googled that for you and it’s a tropical fruit native to South Asia and Southeast Asia. Does it live up to its hype? WebMD says “maybe a little, but it might not be worth it”.
That sounds like the sort of answer Elon might give if pressed on whether it’s worth trying to salvage a relationship with his father.
The Tesla founder has yet to comment publicly on his father’s latest interview. Here’s hoping he continues to focus on what’s important.
