I know, I know.

How can you label a bridge a truck-eater? You must not have met Bridget, or Biddy to those very familiar with her workings.

The Atlantic Road Rail Bridge even has its own dedicated Facebook page where close to 5 000 people admire its ability to stop high-clearance vehicles in their tracks.

In May, CapeTalk’s interest was piqued and Biddy was thrust into the spotlight. Just when you think you’ve made it, along comes Carte Blanche to ensure your name goes up in lights.

The segment aired in late June and was recently uploaded to YouTube:

Built in 1910 for horse-drawn wagons, Bridget “Biddy” the railway bridge has been a standout resident of Muizenberg for over a century. Back then, there were no cars, and she was just the perfect height to carry horses and later steam trains.

But times have changed. Despite her short stature, Biddy’s developed a very big appetite… mostly for trucks too tall to pass safely under her brick façade. Carte Blanche went to meet her.

It makes a nice change from some of the harder-hitting and more depressing segments on the show.

Go on, take a break from the Monday slog and grind.
