When your plane starts to falter mid-flight, there are very few options for making it to the ground in one piece.
That pilot who tried everything before losing hope and then suddenly finding a highway in the forest to make his emergency landing can confirm that.
As can this Belgian pilot involved in a recent incident.
Thank goodness he had a nifty emergency setup on his small plane, allowing a giant parachute to be deployed after the plane broke down in the air, getting him safely to the ground.
Indeed, if it were not for the plane’s Ballistic Recovery System (BRS), the pilot’s life would have been in grave danger.
The dramatic scene unfolded on a street near Bruges on Friday afternoon, where people on the ground heard an explosion and looked up to see the plane slowly floating down.
After its descent, the plane landed perfectly, nose-first, on a road in Sint-Andries, reported Sky News.
Watch until the end to see the pilot hop out unharmed:
Officials said the pilot – who has not been named – was an experienced flyer and is incredibly fortunate to have had the BRS intact:
One pilot told the HLN website: “If you pull a lever in an emergency situation, a missile will fire with the parachute attached.
“I can’t comment on this specific situation, but perhaps that was the safest option for the pilot.”
The pilot only needed some treatment for minor injuries.
He must have been shvitzing a fair bit, though.
