Tuesday’s shark attack in Plettenberg Bay claimed the life of Bruce Wolov.
The attack occurred at Sanctuary Beach (above), on the Robberg side of Robberg 5, according to the NSRI statement, with eyewitness reports alerting rescue services.
The attack was reported to the NSRI at around 2:09PM. A minute later, hiker Gunnar Sigge captured footage of a shark near Sanctuary Beach. It is not known if that was the shark responsible for the attack on Wolov.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday night, family members paid tribute to Wolov, saying they will “remember him as a loving husband, our dad and friend who was taken from us far too soon, while doing what he was passionate about”.

According to Wolov’s LinkedIn profile, he was a portfolio manager at PSG.
Stockbroker David Shapiro sent condolences via Twitter:
Just learnt of the tragic death of Bruce Wolov. Bruce sadly died from injuries sustained from a shark attack y’day while swimming in Plettenberg Bay. He was a long distance swimmer. He was a well known personality in stockbroking circles. Our deepest condolences to his family.

Following Tuesday’s attack, the NSRI and Bitou Municipality appealed “to sea users – bathers, paddlers, sailors and boaters – in Plettenberg Bay and along the Southern Cape coastline to exercise caution”.

Until further notice, the beaches will remain closed for in-water activities
However, boat-based activities and activities on the beaches are still permitted.
