Long before Tiger Woods came from out of nowhere to win the 2019 Masters at Augusta, his place among the pantheon of greatest golfers of all time was cemented.
Jack Nicklaus may have won 18 majors and Tiger 15, but I still reckon the latter is the greatest golfer who has ever lived.
Were it not for his various, um, indiscretions and injuries, which led to years spent away from the course, Tiger would likely have surpassed the Golden Bear in an era where every major he teed off in featured a field packed with potential winners.
Despite spending the better part of three decades in the limelight, Tiger has remained fiercely private and very rarely lets us know his inner thoughts.
Even the much-heralded and no-holds-barred 2020 documentary Tiger was forced to draw on accounts from his inner circle, rather than the man himself.
Golf Digest’s My Game: Tiger Woods won’t come as news to serious golf fans, given that it was first released in 2020, but the 12-part series is still worth a look after being re-released this week.
The golfer “reveals how he approaches every aspect of the game. From technique and practice sessions to fitness and mental training, this 12-part series gives you exclusive insight directly from Tiger himself.”
To get the ball rolling, here’s the first episode:
Naturally, there’s also a closer look at how he won the 2019 green jacket at Augusta:
The final episode features Tiger telling “stories about his craziest shots, the art of smack talk in matches and some of his idiosyncrasies”:
He’s certainly mellowed in recent years, even cracking regular smiles on the course (when he’s not limping through a fourth round). Still, I doubt we’ll see this sort of candour again from Tiger for a while.
I would love to know if rumours that he turned down a “high nine digits” approach from LIV Golf to join the Saudi rebel tour. For some context, “high nine digits” would imply the total to sign onto the tour was in excess of $500 million.
Dustin Johnson was given a reported $125 million for making the switch so it’s plausible Tiger was offered far more.
You’ll find the entire 12-part My Game: Tiger Woods series available on the Golf Digest YouTube channel.
