Easy-peasy.
That’s how these robbers involved in a smash-and-grab in Johannesburg CBD on Saturday made the crime look.
It took them around 30 seconds to surround a vehicle stopped at a red light, smash through at least three windows, steal all they could, and get away scot-free.
CCTV footage captured the gang of about eight men surrounding the white bakkie on the corner of Market and Mooi in the Jozi CBD on Saturday afternoon, News24 reported.
Watch how fast the deed gets done and dusted:
The victim was able to drive away and opened a case at the local police station, confirmed by police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo.
The unfortunate thing is that this is not a once-off occurrence at all, and police seem resistant to doing much about it.
According to the owner of FASDA Protection (which managed to capture the above scene), Andy Henry, there are between two and six smash-and-grabs in the area daily:
“We’ve reached out to the police on numerous occasions, but it just seems to be falling on deaf ears,” he told News24.
Henry attributes the increase in these incidents to two main issues: a lack of visible policing; and victims not opening cases.
“By the time the police arrive, the victims are gone. They just want to get out of there,” he said. “So no one is being convicted, and they’re getting away with these crimes.”
Henry expressed his frustration because, as he notes, “every day, this is getting worse”.
Meanwhile, the police, who have not classified the area as a hotspot for smash-and-grabs, said they will look into it.
