The romance novelist who wrote a blog post titled How to Murder Your Husband has just been found guilty of – wait for it – murdering her husband.
Nancy Crampton Brophy, obsessed with betrayal and spousal murder, has been on trial for the brutal murder of her husband, Dan Brophy, who she shot at close range in 2018.
In the tongue-in-cheek blog post published in 2011, Nancy justified that “if you married for money, aren’t you entitled to all of it?” and explained that to get away with mariticide, “you have to be organized, ruthless and very clever”.
In June 2018, her 63-year-old husband was found with a gunshot wound in his back and one in his chest, lying on the kitchen floor of the Oregon Culinary Institute where he worked.
Prosecutors believe Nancy killed him for the large life insurance policy payout that she immediately set out to obtain after his death.
The Independent notes how she argued that money was not a motivation to kill her husband as she said that their financial problems had largely been solved by cashing in a chunk of Brophy’s retirement savings plan.
Her niece had defended the couple’s love, testifying that she “personally observed” Nancy “grieving, crying, sobbing, breaking down many times,” after Dan’s death.
But Nancy was spotted driving around in her van near the institute on traffic cameras the day of the murder, which prosecutors pointed out, noting how the author had lied about where she was that fateful morning.
There’s also the fact that she was researching and buying ghost guns, which she argued was for inspiration for a future novel, PEOPLE reported:
As for the weapon used, prosecutors argued Nancy looked up and bought a “ghost gun” kit online before purchasing a Glock 17 handgun while at the Portland Gun Expo.
She later bought a separate slide and barrel that could fit the weapon, prosecutors said, according to KGW. Though the slide and barrel Nancy bought were not used in the murder, prosecutors said during the trial that police were never able to find the extra slide and barrel to match them with the bullets used.
One of Nancy’s previous cellmates, Andrea Jacobs, testified that Nancy told her Dan was shot two times to the heart, and that Nancy “showed me the distance,” showing the length with her arms and adding, “it was about this far.”
Writing that she spends a lot of time “thinking about murder and, consequently, about police procedure” and adding that “murder is supposed to set me free” certainly didn’t lend her any favours, although her essays and books were not used as evidence.
Well, everyone knows that art imitates life and vice versa.
Nancy will receive her sentencing in a hearing scheduled for June 13.
The victim’s mother, Karen Brophy, is “very, very thankful that everything has turned out the way it has” after a “long three and a half years” waiting for closure.
