Name-dropping seems to be Netflix’s latest modus operandi.
Since the streaming giant is losing subscribers at extreme rates, I guess it’s whatever it takes to stay ahead of the chasing pack.
The platform’s latest action comes packed with big names, so much so that AV Club reckons the trailer could have just been an email.
The Gray Man stars Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, as well as Ana de Armas, Regé-Jean Page, Billy Bob Thornton, Jessica Henwick, Dhanush, Wagner Moura, and Alfre Woodard.
Oh, and it’s directed by the Russo brothers, the guys behind Avengers: Endgame.
The trailer really plays into the film’s strengths, with quick shots of Gosling and Evans trying to kill each other interspersed with the “INTENSE MUSIC AS WE LIST EVERY FAMOUS PERSON IN THE MOVIE” trick.
Take a look:
Since AV Club is so starstruck that they have no idea what’s going on in the plot, we’ll turn to the official synopsis for help.
The screenplay is based on Mark Greaney’s novel of the same name, by the way:
The Gray Man is CIA operative Court Gentry (Ryan Gosling), aka, Sierra Six. Plucked from a federal penitentiary and recruited by his handler, Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton), Gentry was once a highly-skilled, Agency-sanctioned merchant of death.
But now the tables have turned and Six is the target, hunted across the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a former cohort at the CIA, who will stop at nothing to take him out. Agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas) has his back. He’ll need it.
It will be available globally from July 22 on Netflix.
There are rumours that the Russo brothers plan to expand this spy cinematic universe and make it into a saga.
Just as Fast and the Furious comes to an end. You can’t win.
