The United Kingdom is open to non-UK residents moving in who have a job or skillset that is currently in short supply in the labour market.
The UK government has released its shortage occupation list for 2022, featuring around 30 jobs that allow more relaxed eligibility for those aiming for sponsored work visas in the country.
The catch is that if your job is on the list, you’ll have to give up 20% of the job’s usual going rate to qualify for a Skilled Worker visa.
Furthermore, per the UK government website, annual salaries for these jobs are based on a 39-hour working week.
They must be pro-rated for other working patterns, based on the weekly working hours stated by your employer.
Here’s a specialist immigration legal firm, Davidson Morris, via BusinessTech:
“Under the new points-based immigration system, most non-UK resident workers must apply for a visa to come to the UK to work. The primary route is the new Skilled Worker visa, which replaced the Tier 2 (General) visa,” the firm said.
“For employers looking to sponsor skilled non-UK resident workers, a number of strict requirements apply in respect of the role being recruited for. To be eligible for the new visa, the worker must attain 70 points, covering attributes such as skills, language and salary requirements.”
20 points are “tradeable” from that 20% taken from the going salary rate for the jobs on the list.
England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are experiencing the biggest shortages, and are looking for the following in-demand skills.
We’ll show you 10 of the listed job types and the corresponding annual salary, which is always 80% of the going rate:

While jobs in the health, science, engineering, and IT industries take the top spots with the highest payable salaries, there are other jobs in demand like veterinarians, architects, artists, dancers, graphic designers, and care workers down the list, too.
