A woman on an American Airlines flight got herself into a sticky situation when she started threatening the safety of herself and the other passengers.
After allegedly attacking the flight crew and trying to open a door of the plane mid-flight, the woman was duct-taped to her chair in an effort to control her movements.
Then she was put on the airline’s “internal” no-fly list and handed a massive $81 950 fine (almost 1,2 million) for her unruly behaviour.
It appears as though the woman was having some kind of mental breakdown, becoming completely unhinged as the plane flew from Dallas-Fort Worth to Charlotte, North Carolina, on July 6 last year.
The plane had apparently been delayed for three hours and once it took off, an hour into the flight, chaos ensued:
TikTok user @lol.ariee posted the now-viral but deleted video of the scene, explaining a lot of what happened, per The New York Post:
Flight attendants began turning on the lights around 1:30 a.m., she said, “and we see all flight attendants running up and down the aisles, frantically kind of like whispering to each other.”
The plane’s crew began locking bathrooms, grabbing bags from overhead bins, and wouldn’t say what was happening, @lol.ariee said. “It was just kind of like chaos and no one knows what’s going on,” she continued.
The pilot had to settle everyone over the intercom, referencing “a bad situation in the plane right now” and asking people to stay in their seats.
“Then we’re gradually starting to hear more and more screaming, and we’re like, ‘Wait a minute,’” she noted.
Just as the plane was about to land, a flight attendant who sat near them explained that a woman with an apparent mental issue “had an outburst and like, had the urge to get off the plane. And she was saying, ‘I need to get off this plane,’ and she went up to the exits and started banging on the doors, saying, ‘You need to let me off this plane!’”
At this point the flight crew had to “literally take her down”, forcing her into a seat.
American Airlines confirmed that the woman had to be restrained “for the safety and security of other customers and our crew”.
The airline also mentioned that the woman assaulted and bit a flight attendant after she “attempted to open the forward boarding door”. There are also claims that she tried “to hug and kiss” another passenger.
