You’re looking at a shot of Marmaris, Turkey, often referred to as the Pearl of the Turkish Riviera.
Golden beaches, watersports, boating, sailing, adventure and outdoor sports, cycling, hiking, mountain biking, climbing – Marmaris has it all.
Perhaps its biggest selling point is that, according to the latest Holiday Money Report from the UK Post Office, the Turkish town has the lowest prices out of the 36 popular destinations surveyed.
The report was published in March, so it’s pretty much up to speed and takes into consideration the changes brought on by two years of living with COVID-19.
The Telegraph has compiled a cheapest and most expensive destinations summary.
Look at number four on that list. Come on, Brits with your strong pound, don’t be shy:
That little asterisk next to the word ‘meal’ stipulates that it’s a meal for two and includes a bottle of house red wine.
£50,44 works out at roughly R950. Each vertical line above represents £20, so we can guess that the Cape Town meal worked out at around just shy of £40, or around R700.
Seems fair.
On the other side of the equation, the five most expensive destinations are as follows:
Again, the report didn’t cover every destination, but rather 36 popular tourist spots.
And yes, there are flaws to the methodology:
The Post Office survey has some limitations. Its shopping basket contains only eight items – five of which are drinks of various kinds – and for most countries it only surveys one resort.
If you want to dig further into the methodology of the report, you can do so here.
One more table for the road? Sure.
Turkey’s sizeable drop is due in large part to the fact that the value of the Turkish currency, the Turkish lira, has plunged over the past 12 months.
In terms of long haul travel from the UK, the Mother City remains the best value.
