There’s probably only one person in the world who can rival Stephen King in terms of inflicting reputational damage on clowns.

King wrote It, which caused nightmares the world over, but John Wayne Gacy murdered at least 30 young boys and men and earned the nickname ‘the Killer Clown’.

Before the law caught up with him, Gacy regularly performed at children’s hospitals and charity events in character as ‘Pogo the Clown’ or ‘Patches the Clown’.

Infamously, as we learn in the new Netflix three-part docuseries Conversations with a Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes, he once stated that clowns “can get away with anything. Clowns can get away with murder.”

Collider reports that the series follows the downfall of one of America’s most infamous serial killers:

[Gacy] is one of many serial killers who operated in the United States during the 1970s. A closeted gay man, Gacy targeted vulnerable teenage boys, often from poorer households, who often slipped past police’s notice when they went missing.

Gacy accumulated over thirty victims over his several-year spree, often hiding the bodies in his own home, creating a macabre point of discovery that would become tabloid fodder after the full breadth of his crimes were exposed.
