The Godfather trilogy is arguably the greatest trilogy of all time.
Some would punt for Star Wars, or The Lord of the Rings, or even Back to the Future, and that’s fine by me.
But both 1972’s The Godfather and 1974’s The Godfather: Part II feature in the top three of IMDb’s greatest ever movies.
The Godfather Part III has been criticised over the years, with director Francis Ford Coppola itching for a redo.
He got his wish with Mario Puzo’s The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone.
Whilst the behind-the-scenes story of how the trilogy was made has been covered in documentaries and books, it hasn’t been given the dramatic series treatment.
In stepped Paramount+ and now we have The Offer to look forward to, reports Polygon:
Just in time for The Godfather’s 50th anniversary, Paramount Plus’ new limited series, The Offer, chronicles how producer Albert S. Ruddy made a film often cited as one of the greatest of all time.
A new trailer for the April release gives those unfamiliar with the saga a taste of the drama: Besides the Hollywood economics of bankrolling a gangster movie after a string of similar failures, Ruddy deals with shady finances, a big-thinking director in Francis Ford Coppola, the wild persona of Paramount’s exec Robert Evans, and the influence of Italian-American Civil Rights League, led by the mobster Joe Colombo.
The mafia has feelings too, and at the time, they did not much care for the prospect of a Godfather movie.
You don’t want to upset the mafia. They have lots of money and questionable scruples.
Miles Teller plays the lead and is ably supported by the likes of Matthew Goode, Giovanni Ribisi, Dan Fogler, and Juno Temple:
There are 10 episodes in total (everything The Godfather-related must take up hours of your time).
The first three episodes debut on Paramount+ on April 28, with new episodes rolling out on Thursdays.
