I don’t know about you, but I grew up with the joke that the Queen, and by extension, the British royals, don’t succumb to nature’s calls or any other improprieties.
But of course, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
The royals, just like everybody else, make plenty of mistakes.
As for those in the way of fashion – well, one could publish a whole book about it.
There are those fashion faux pas that really could have and ought to have been avoided (like those bizarre hats seen above, worn by Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, that “launched a thousand memes”), while others feel like the media simply enjoys an unnecessary dig and getting personal about the Royal Family.
The female members of the family seem to bear the brunt, and often what they’re wearing starts to seem like it’s undermining who they are and what they’re capable of.
Take for example this iconic shot of Princess Diana in a translucent skirt while working at a nursery in 1981, considered a fashion faux pas back then:
Diana, who was 19 at the time, was horrified when the photo came out and did not mean for it to be see-through.
It was only translucent because of the backlight from the sun that shone at just the right angle at that exact moment.
Another fashion fail highlighted by Business Insider was Meghan Markle arriving in Tonga in a red dress that she forgot to remove the price tag from back in 2018:
Sometimes, though, the outfit is genuinely questionable.
Like that time when Kate Middleton was accused of ignoring the all-black dress code for women to support the #MeToo movement at the 2018 BAFTAs:
Expected to be politically neutral as a royal, she wore a dark green dress, just on the edge of the supportive all-black, which publications at the time criticised.
Sometimes the fashion mistake can’t be helped, especially if you’re at a party.
The Queen, usually picture-perfect, was spotted in a food-stained dress at her cousin, Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece’s 70th birthday party in 2010:
The [Mirror] reported that the monarch is “usually very particular about her appearance and immaculately turned out,” which made the apparent fashion faux pas that much more glaring.
In a separate report, the Daily Mail wrote it was understood the stain resulted from a “coffee spillage” done by a server.
On top of the stain, the Queen’s broken bag added to the dishevelled look:
She was either having too much fun or none at all – I cannot tell.
The ultimate fashion faux pas also happened to the Queen when Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, pitched up (to a separate event, though on the same day) wearing almost the exact same outfit as her in 2019:
Not ideal.
Apparently, for the boys, the bottom of their shoes gets the most side-eyeing.
Prince Harry was found at a friend’s wedding in 2018 wearing shoes with holes in the sole:
Similarly, Prince William’s shoes were also spotted a bit worn out while chatting with Sir David Attenborough:
At least they’re not wasteful by wearing something once and then throwing it out?
Anyway, there you have it – the British royals also make fashion mistakes every once in a while.
