During the two years we’ve been spent living under some form of lockdown, movies and series have provided a great escape.
Who can ever forget the feeding frenzy that was Tiger King while we remained almost entirely cooped up at home?
Quick, get out and exercise between 6AM and 9PM, but only within a five-kilometre radius of your home.
Now Judd Apatow, the producer famous for churning out smash hit comedies for the best part of three decades, is drawing on the experience of lockdowns and COVID-19 bubbles for his next movie.
The Bubble comes out on Netflix on April 1, with this synopsis via Variety:
In “The Bubble,” Karen Gillan and Pedro Pascal play the lead actors in the action film “Cliff Beasts 6: The Battle for Everest: Memories of a Requiem,” who get stranded at a hotel after the pandemic halts production. Leslie Mann and David Duchovny also star, playing a divorced acting couple forced to quarantine together. Netflix previously released a meta teaser trailer for the fictional “Cliff Beasts 6.”
The comedy is reportedly inspired by the real-life production of “Jurassic World: Dominion,” which faced numerous pandemic-related delays that forced the cast to remain in the United Kingdom for months.
It could also have been inspired by any number of films delayed due to the pandemic.
Apatow loves nothing more than a massive ensemble cast and The Bubble is no different.
Along with Karen Gillan, Pedro Pascal, Leslie Mann, and David Duchovny, you’ll also spot Iris Apatow (the daughter of Judd and Mann), Fred Armisen, Maria Bakalova, Keegan-Michael Key, Peter Serafinowicz, and Rob Delaney.
That’s the same Rob Delaney from Catastrophe. If you haven’t watched that, get stuck in.
Let’s get our first look at this trailer, then:
If you really want to get meta, you can go down the faux Cliff Beasts wormhole that has been cooked up:
