Film award season is upon us.

In late February it was the SAG Awards, which are useful as a barometer of potential Oscars glory.

Now the EE British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) has just announced the winners across 25 categories during an in-person ceremony at Royal Albert Hall in London.

Rebel Wilson was the host, naming Netflix’s The Power of the Dog as the Best Film.

Warner Bros’ Dune dominated in the crafts categories, receiving a whopping five trophies: for Production Design, Special Visual Effects, Cinematography, Sound, and Original Score.

The sound in Dune is striking. I mean, it was the work of Hans Zimmer, who has scored over 200 films and been nominated for an Oscar 11 times, so that was guaranteed.

The podcast Song Exploder has a really cool chat with Zimmer about how he made the music for the epic film – worth a listen even if you’re not a music junkie.

The ceremony had a live audience, but still, an “unusual amount of winners” per Deadline did not attend the ceremony due to conflicting scheduled and positive COVID-19 tests.

Producer Ian Canning thus received the award for The Power of the Dog in place of Jane Campion who could not make it.

Quoting Thomas Savage, the author of the book the film is based on, Canning said, “Everyone has the right to be seen, everyone has the right to feel safe, everyone has the right to love.”

Amen.
