When you’re a high-ranking ANC politician, the world is your oyster.
By world, I mean taxpayer money, and by oyster I mean corruption.
The EFF’s top dogs, including Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu, have no problem splashing looted VBS Bank money on Gucci and other high-end products.
They’re doing it all wrong, though. Perhaps it comes down to inexperience – the ANC has had far longer to perfect the art of looting – but what about the next generation, Juju?
The Zondo Commission laid bare just how cushy life is for the kids of high-ranking ANC officials, with cars, cash, apartments, and other gifts flooding in.
Ask The Daily Maverick’s Rebecca Davis, who’s compiled a handy list. We begin with Katleho Mokonyane, the daughter of Nomvula Mokonyane [below], our previous Minister of Water and Sanitation who flushed billions down the loo:
It was Bosasa COO Angelo Agrizzi who drew the attention of the Zondo Commission to Katleho Mokonyane.
Agrizzi claimed that, as part of the wider parcel of bribes paid by Bosasa to former minister Mokonyane, Bosasa CEO Gavin Watson would hire luxury cars for her daughter on her visits home from China, where she was studying.
Nomvula claimed her daughter was hired by Bosasa for ‘vacation work’ because she spoke Mandarin. I wish my vacation work gig hired a “premium vehicle such as [an] Audi A3″ to ferry me around.
Oh, there’s also the small matter of Katleho’s role as a director of Tuwo Rhodesia, a company that the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) says benefitted from PPE corruption to the tune of more than R1 million.
Tshepiso Magashule, the son of the one and only Ace, has long been suckling from that teat. Way back when in 2011, he was known to drive a BMW Z4 owned by the Guptas thanks to a job his old man landed him:
The Guptaleaks emails revealed that Tshepiso and twin brother Thato enjoyed a lavish 2015 holiday in Dubai on the Gupta dime. Four years previously, Tshepiso had taken a three-week trip to New York and Venice with the Guptas and Duduzane Zuma…
Tshepiso and his brother were awarded PPE contracts worth R2.7-million by the Free State government in July 2020. Neither has been mentioned in State Capture report findings up to this point.
Ah yes, the man that stands head and shoulders above the rest.
Duduzane, whose impressive suit collection has been put to the test due to his father’s seemingly never-ending court appearances.
His long-term dalliance with the Guptas is well known but further details were revealed in the 2017 Guptaleaks emails:
[The leak] helped to flesh out some of the detail, including that the Guptas had helped Duduzane to buy an R18-million flat in Dubai’s Burj Khalifa skyscraper where he spent most of the pandemic holed up…
Part Two of the State Capture report mentioned Duduzane Zuma in connection with Denel, with Zondo stating: “Mr Tony Gupta’s idea was that the government officials and state-owned enterprise officials would have realised that through Mr Duduzane Zuma he had easy access to Mr Duduzane Zuma’s father, president Zuma.”
One has to mention what is arguably Duduzane’s finest interview moment, dating back to 2017. With his father still at the helm, Duduzane told the BBC that he wasn’t “born with a silver spoon in my mouth. It is something I have had to work for.”
Also receiving honorary mentions in Davis’ article are Andile Ramaphosa, the son of Cyril Ramaphosa, and Thalente Myeni, the son of Dudu Myeni.
