In 2018, Cosmopolitan referred to Meghan Markle’s half-sister, Samantha Markle, as the “Royal Family’s IRL nightmare” and “resident pot-stirrer”.
It’s five years later and it looks like those descriptions still apply.
Now, Samantha is suing her half-sister for defamation pertaining to some of the things Meghan said during that bombshell interview she and Prince Harry gave Oprah Winfrey nearly a year ago.
Page Six obtained the court documents that claim Meghan made “false and malicious statements” during her time with Oprah.
According to Samantha, some of Meghan’s false claims include saying that she was “an only child” as well as lying about the timeframe of when she and Samantha last saw each other.
Not sure if that is worth a legal battle but okay.
The court doc continues:
“The defamatory implication is that Plaintiff [Samantha] had no relationship whatsoever with her sister Meghan, they were virtual strangers and that Plaintiff has created a lucrative career selling false stories to tabloids and television programs when she knows nothing about Defendant’s childhood,” reads the filing.
Samantha has, for a long time, held on to the fact that “the tabloids [and Meghan] wanted to create this African-American, rags-to-riches Cinderella story, which is so far from reality”.
She is once again bringing that up in the lawsuit:
“Meghan falsely claimed that: (a) she essentially raised herself from virtual poverty; (b) she was forced from the age of 13 to work in a series of low-paying jobs to ‘make ends meet,’” reads the complaint, further accusing Meghan of misleading the public regarding Thomas’ absence from her 2018 wedding.
Samantha goes on to defend their father, Thomas Markle:
“Mr. Markle suffered two heart attacks in the weeks before Defendant’s wedding in May 2018 due to stress associated with the Royal wedding, the constant hounding and harassment by paparazzi and other media, and upsetting text messages he received from Defendant and Prince Harry, and Mr. Markle’s cardiologist told him he was too sick to travel to England for the wedding; Mr. Markle did not refuse to attend the wedding, but was instructed by his doctor not to attend the wedding.”
For a guy who hates bine hounded by the paparazzi and other media, he sure talks to them a lot.
Samantha also went after Meghan’s New York Times best-selling book, Finding Freedom, saying that it is “nothing more than a book of lies” written to “disseminated false and malicious statements”.
If Samantha gets this right, she will walk away with $75 000 (just over R1 million) in damages.
What a way to make a quick buck.
Meghan’s attorney, Michael Kump says he will be giving this lawsuit “the minimum attention necessary, which is all it deserves”.
