Of all the social media platforms on the internet, Reddit is up there with the most absurd.
If you’ve spent time scrolling through the wild tales being told on the more interesting subreddits, then you’ll start to see what I mean.
We have a list of some of the more fun subreddits, but things can get awkward if not outright dark on the platform pretty quickly.
Take for example this UK man’s horrendous dating story upvoted by more than 24 000 users in the subreddit “Today I F***ed Up” (r/tifu).
His tale is titled “TIFU by getting shot by my date” with a sad smiley, which really doesn’t reflect the true emotion that such a date would cause.
Usually, bad dates end with the two parties walking off separately after realising that things didn’t work out so well, but this guy and his date seemed to have bonded over the trauma of their date.
Here’s Newsweek to kick us off:
He prefaced his post by noting that, while the situation that played out was bad it was “not as bad as it could’ve been across the pond,” namely because he was shot with an air rifle rather than an actual rifle.
According to the post, the “experienced outdoorsman” had recently “hit it off” with 19-year-old Ellie thanks to their “shared love of nature, animals and scary stories” and eventually they decided to go shooting.
He takes her to his favourite spot, shows her some of the basics for firearm safety, and admits that he knew early on what a bad shot she was.
Later, he finds himself needing to answer the “call of nature”, so he leaves his date and heads into the range to offload.
When walking back, he said he couldn’t hear any shots and assumed Ellie wasn’t shooting any longer:
So I cut across the range to get back quicker. Didn’t occur to me that she was reloading.
I make it up over the Ridge onto the range just in time to hear a crack and a searing pain in my left shoulder.
Here’s the rest of how the story goes:
Jeez, if they didn’t think a bullet in the shoulder, a trip to the hospital, and some “god awful coffee” wasn’t that bad, I wonder what the hell is.
According to his edit with a link to his story about the second date, things went much better than the first date.
Ellie gave him a wrapped tin of .22 air rifle pellets as an apology gift (erm, cute?) and then they cuddled on the couch until they made things official.
What a story to tell the grandkids, hey?
