There were dramatic scenes on the N1 inbound at the N7 offramp in Goodwood, Cape Town, yesterday evening.
A shootout, arrests, and members of the public stuffing their pockets with money were all on show after suspects ambushed a cash-in-transit vehicle.
Speaking to News24, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda said that four arrests had been made.
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said that one suspect sustained a gunshot wound to his buttocks (how very Forrest Gump) and another was shot in his right thigh.
More from Netshiunda:
“It [was] reported that a Jeep which was driving along the N7 stopped abruptly in the middle of the road, causing a light delivery vehicle to collide with the cash van. The suspects are alleged to have used explosives to blow the safe open. One vehicle is reported to have caught fire during the robbery,” Netshiunda said in a statement on Wednesday morning.
He said members of the police’s National Intervention Unit responded to the incident, and a shootout ensued between the police officers and the robbers.
Unfortunately, the security guard and the driver of the CIT van were also shot and have since received treatment for their wounds.
