The most devastating tornado in Kentucky’s history devoured everything in its path over the weekend.
From the twisted debris, 80 deaths have been confirmed, but officials fear that the death toll might turn out to be way worse.
Kentucky governor Andy Beshear says that there will likely be more than 100 lives lost from the immense tornadoes that destroyed all the towns in its wake, particularly Mayfield, reported the BBC.
He said that nothing in the direct line of the tornado is still standing, with one resident adding that the scene is “the definition of Hell on Earth”.
Drone footage from storm chaser Brandon Clement shows how everything was left completely flattened by the powerful storm:
There have been 14 deaths reported in four other states as well, per CNN, including Missouri, Tennessee and Mississippi:
A stretch of more than 250 miles from Arkansas to Kentucky might have been hit by one violent, long-track twister, CNN meteorologists say.
Among the worst cases of destruction is the collapsed candle factory in Mayfield that had 110 workers inside, with eight deaths confirmed and eight people still missing:
“They rescued 40,” Beshear said at a news conference Saturday afternoon. “There’s at least 15 feet of metal with cars on top of it, barrels of corrosive chemicals that are there, it will be a miracle if anybody else is found alive in it.”
Emergency workers had to dig through the rubble to find survivors:
Six people were killed in a collapsed Amazon warehouse in Edwardsville, Illinois, with more people still reported missing.
In Arkansas, two people died, one of which was in a nursing home that partly collapsed. Four deaths were confirmed in Tennessee, while one death was confirmed in Missouri.
President Joe Biden has declared a major federal disaster in Kentucky and ordered federal aid to be made available to the hardest-hit areas.
