This year’s Black Friday sales saw some really big spenders with a few South African shoppers dishing out hundreds of thousands of rands in a single transaction.
The country’s biggest banks revealed the online and in-store spending and swiping numbers from their customers on November 26 via MyBroadband.
Whether the spending was on Black Friday deals or not, that day still saw some big money being thrown around.
A Nedbank customer spent the single biggest amount in a single transaction on the day, forking out an impressive R697 236,15.
Did anyone see small houses on sale this past Black Friday by any chance?
The largest amounts for a single transaction recorded by five local banks on Black Friday were:
- Nedbank with a customer spending R697 236
- Discovery Bank with a customer spending R614 000
- FNB with a customer spending R500 000
- ABSA with a customer spending R456 512
- Standard Bank with a customer spending R450 010
Meanwhile, a Discovery Bank customer took the cake for the highest number of transactions made by a single customer on the day with a total of 70 purchases.
The top five figures for the highest number of transactions recorded on a single account for each bank were:
- 70 transactions via Discovery Bank
- 64 transactions via FNB
- 58 transactions via Nedbank
- 45 transactions via ABSA
- Standard Bank didn’t announce its figure
All five banks said that overall spending was up quite a bit this year compared to Black Friday last year.
It was the same story in the UK as the region rung up its biggest Black Friday sales day ever according to available data.
But good old consumers were not the only ones who scored big this year. Scammers, too, were able to pick up some good bargains.
The Citizen reported that suspected digital shopping fraud in South Africa increasing by 4,2% to 7,8% between 25 and 29 November compared to last year.
