Over the past few years, South Africans have begun to reexamine the movies of Leon Schuster.
When Schuks! Pay Back the Money! aired on M-Net in the (formerly coveted) Sunday 8PM slot in 2016 there was a sizeable backlash.
Aside from the fact that Schuks! Pay Back the Money! may well be one of the worst movies ever made, Schuster also came under fire for ‘blackface’.
Leaving that in the past, let’s take a look at the trailer for Mr Bones 3: Son of Bones.
Mr Bones, released in 2001, smashed domestic box office records so naturally, this horse is being flogged.
Ster-Kinekor released the trailer on Twitter yesterday but I will pop the YouTube version below for your perusal:
I’m sure you’ll recognise Leon’s right-hand man, Alfred Ntombela, as well as the likes of Tumi Morake, Jerry Mofokeng and Jay Anstey.
The film is due for release on April 15 next year.
Naturally, the most stinging barbs came via Twitter:
Do your thing Eskom.🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
15 April 2022.

My heart bleeds for the wonderful films and stories that could have been told had they received the funding this nonsense received💔

I’m not one to judge but if you actually go and watch this you’re part of the problem https://t.co/d7zuPOE74K

Only in South Africa will they continue to give a platform to an old yt man who’s entire celebrity presence is built on doing blackface and making a profit off of mocking black ethnic groups in the country. https://t.co/5afpccSj83

Honestly does anyone have a more racist filmography than Leon Schuster? https://t.co/44Tl5ku4Zb pic.twitter.com/xDvKAMtAo2

There were also plenty who came out in support of Schuster:
If you not a fan of Leon Schuster just move on and let us who are enjoy.

No matter what you say about Leon, we all grew up simbukela and we loved his content. I know for a fact that his candid camera content inspired a lot of people, especially the YouTube content creators.
I still love the dude’s content and I’m looking forward to this and more.

I’m one of those Black South Africans who enjoy Leon Schuster because at the end of the day it’s entertainment like any other. My take away from Leon Schuster ‘s productions is being able to laugh at yourself sometimes in life. The Man made Black household’s childhoods.

Once more, we are divided.
I guess everyone has their own taste in entertainment but you couldn’t pay me to watch Mr Bones 3: Son of Bones.
