The Grammy Awards are doing things a little differently this year.
First of all, they’re including 10 nominees under each category instead of the usual eight.
This is because voting and submissions are up quite substantially this year and as Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, which oversees the Grammys, said: “This is an incredible opportunity for us to honour more artists and shine a light on more great music.”
Hey, we’re not complaining.
Secondly, the procedure for selecting nominees this year has also changed in that they’re getting rid of the controversial “secret committees” that had curated the final lists in recent decades and rather going with the popular vote.
Fair game, then.
Well, this year’s top nominees are as one would have expected, except for the top vote in the Album Of The Year category.
Jon Batiste is leading the charge with 11 nominations, mostly for his We Are album (which we’ve popped down below), but also for his film score to the tear-jerking animation Soul.
Batiste is generally considered a veteran jazz keyboardist and the musical director of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
Now, the final nominations list for the 64th annual Grammy Awards, thanks to Variety:
