Eye bags are in vogue right now.
No, not bags shaped like eyes, or bags for your eyes.
Those sagging, dark circles around your eyes that bring attention to how absolutely shattered you are – those eye bags.
The beauty movement, which truly emulates how we all feel after the last year or five, is all thanks to TikTok. Naturally.
Don’t worry, The Guardian is just as confuzzled as you and I are about this, crediting a TikTok user named @saracarstens for the trend:
A few months ago she posted a video where she smeared makeup underneath her eyes in an effort to mimic the sort of dark circles you’d usually only expect to see in the very tired or unwell.
Sara has three million followers and she seems to mostly post videos of her crying, or in some kind of emotional distress.
She apparently created the makeup concept as a way to embrace the dark circles she had previously spent so many years attempting to conceal.
Now, the makeup community is also on a quest to reclaim their flaws by sharing tutorials on how to look “more tired”, applying different layers of foundations, eyeshadows and concealers to create dark under-eye circles:

Even in the world of high fashion, you’re quite likely to see people with bejewelled eye bags.
Model Ella Emhoff came to the Met Gala with crystals around their eyes, like little tears:
As well as Ben Platt, who glued a single crystal under each eye for the event:
Want a more realistic tutorial for your own designer eyebags?
First, you should try to spend all your time sitting in front of a screen, trying to fulfil the requirements of a job that asks too much of you.
…After that it’s easy street. Don’t drink enough water. Get nowhere near the amount of sleep your body craves. Before long you’ll look incredible.
And consider these dos and don’ts before being or seeing someone in all their unwell glory:
Do say: “Hey, you look cool.”
Don’t say: “Thanks, it’s because I’m so exhausted that I’m legally prohibited from operating heavy machinery.”
Excited to see what other typically unflattering features TikTok will turn into a trend next.
