Education is in dire need of some change all over the world, including in South Africa.
This is especially pertinent after seeing how badly affected the education sector in our country was by the COVID-19 pandemic.
So bad that there were reports of a “lost generation” of learners, with the average grade three child in June 2021 said to know about the same as the average grade two child of 2019.
More and more schools were forced to move learning online for some time during the schools’ terms, with teachers, parents and students fumbling to figure out how to make it all work as seamlessly and as normally as possible.
The University of Cape Town, in partnership with Cape Town-based education technology company Valenture Institute, took the opportunity to capitalise on the moment with a revolutionary education offering.
Together they launched an exclusively online high school, and there has been tons of interest across South Africa’s cities and towns, as well as the African continent at large.
Already there have been 5 000 learner applications for the school opening in January 2022, and the interest is only climbing:
Learners will benefit from the UCT Online High School’s supported self-discipline model, which allows learners to pace their own learning and get high quality 1:1 tutoring from expert teachers and support coaches whenever they need it.
Learners will also be prepared with a unique range of university and career preparation services and offerings.
To meet this demand, the Valenture Institute and UCT Online High School are currently hiring over 300 new staff members across South Africa.
This includes everyone from teachers, mentors, and learning coaches, to teaching assistants, software developers, content creators, and learning designers.
This will really help UCT cement itself as the first university on the African continent to extend its expertise and impact to the secondary schooling market by taking things online.
The recruitment process is in action at the moment, with all available positions accessible here for online applications.
The positions all come with some pretty decent benefits, too:
Employees of Valenture Institute & UCT Online High School have access to a variety of work benefits such as a family member tuition discount, remote work, voluntary saving programme, birthday leave, ‘wellness wednesdays’ meditation sessions & referral bonuses.
